The following Cosmetology Students Statistics were gleaned from US & Canadian stylists, barbers, nail techs, estheticians and massage therapists who were actively seeking employment– not booth rental. “Employee based” includes: commission, hourly and team based businesses. Our student users received education in hair, esthetics, nail and or massage programs- not solely cosmetology.

Cosmetology Student Facts on Eco-Friendly Salon Products

When asked about how student cosmetologists feel about eco-conscious products, this is the overall data that was provided.

While students may or may not have had exposure to or had experience with organic salon products, the interest in lower toxicity salon practices are evident.

Over 70% of future cosmetologists indicated either a strong preference towards eco-friendly products, or has interest in incorporating green practices into their careers.

This is great news for organic product distributors. Less than 25% of future hair stylists, barbers, nail technicians, estheticians and massage therapists interested in employee-based salons show no interest in green salon products.

Criminal History Statistics on Cosmetology Students

When asked about what type of criminal history our experienced cosmetology, barber, nail tech, esthetician and massage therapy students have, this is the overall data that was provided.

Most salon, spa and barber professionals enter school under the age of 25.

Students and new graduates entering employee based businesses are keeping their nose clean, for the most part.

Some of this may be due to the fact the student population is younger or potentially this is the future of cosmetology employees and criminal records.

These facts should come as a relief to salon owners who are hiring new graduates!

Beauty School Students Need Support

When asked if commission, hourly and team-based pay beauty school grads need  assistance in building a client base, this is the overall data that was provided.

While it is no surprise that students don’t build much of a client base in school, some students do feel they can recruit customers on their own.

The majority of our students feel they need the support of a salon, spa or barber shop owner in order to grow.

Building a salon client base is not easy. If you are a salon owner, please help your new student hires understand the effort that goes into growing a great customer base.

Data on Cosmetology Students and their Competitive Nature

When asked about how new cosmetologists feel about competition in salon businesses, this is the overall data that was provided.

New graduates are excited about their future careers, but the statistics demonstrate they are not as excited to be in a competitive environment.

On the flip side, data shows the desire to be involved in friendly contests and competitions may still be alive.

Motivators for the future salon workforce are different. Time off, a great work-life balance and happiness at work, far outweigh the desire to compete.

Finding what motivates individuals is the key to getting optimal results for salon employees.

Facts Cosmetology Students Need for Leadership

When asked about the type of leadership new cosmetology students want, this is the overall data that was provided.

While a lot can be learned in school and from social media, nothing can replace excellent leadership and mentorship.

We often hear owners complain that students think they “know it all”, and want to charge an exorbitant amount for service, right out of the gate.

We also hear how new graduates get lost in a new salon, spa or barber shop because the leadership wasn’t great.

The desire for great leadership is clearly present, but can the industry step up and meet this demand?

Cosmetology Students Statistics on the Desire to Work in Independently Owned Salons, Spas and Barbershops

When asked what type of ownership our new graduates crave, this is the overall data that was provided.

New grads don’t have the career experience to understand the intrinsic differences in corporate vs non-corporate salons.

Many of our students did specifically indicate they were not interested in work environments that were franchised, while the largest percentage did not have a preference, yet.

Corporations are ever-present at beauty school career fairs, keeping their salon recruitment funnel wide open, at all times.

Many franchise owners focus in on students as their #1 recruitment strategy, in attempt to soften the attitude on corporations to the future of the salon industry.
